Movement Generation Through Improvisation
This class encourages students through improvisation to develop their artistic and choreographic voice in dance regardless of their skill level or genres of expertise. The 90 minute class will begin with a conditioning warm up to get the body moving and prepared for the improvisation prompts students will participate in. The next section of the class will consist of several improvisational prompts focusing on the individual dancer and their personal movement aesthetic. These prompts will challenge the dancers to explore elements of space, parts of the body, and senses through movement. Dancers will then have the opportunity to apply these prompts and their discoveries to group choreography by leading improvisation prompts. In this section, dancers will be broken up into small groups and the role of choreographer will rotate. The class will then close with a class improvisation jam utilizing the tools learned and students are free to participate or observe. Ages sixteen and up. There will be colored wristbands provided for dancers to signify whether or not they are comfortable with contact improvisation.
